"Waikiki" sung by Na Leo Pilimehana
<bgsound src="Hawaiian - Na Leo Pilimehana - Waikiki.mp3" loop=infinite>
This beautiful song was written by Andy Cummings (1913-1995)
while he was away from the islands on a cold,
foggy nite while on tour in Lansing, Michigan in 1938.

And now the story begins of how in the World did Hawaii draw me to her Islands bits and pieces across time...

My mother, Nada Carmen Scott Moore, and her brother, Emil Silvan Scott, were the closest of 11 siblings growing up in Jourdanton, Texas.

Emil became a pilot and flew in the Territory of Hawaii on the Island of Oahu from December 1936 to December 1937. He flew to the Big Island and Kauai. That landing field on Kauai is now an ocean side golf course. After a long distance relationship, Emil married Elizabeth Steele in 1939. Along the way she adopted the name "Georgi" as her own.

Emil was killed March 14, 1942 in Kunming, China in a plane crash. I was born November 27, 1942. My Uncle Emil's life pulled me to Asia and the Islands for as long as I can remember. Which made it so much easier for me to understand the movie, Six Degrees of Separation , and how we all are truly connected in ways we may never have thought about until now...

After Emil's death my mother inherrited, what was called all of my life, the "cedar chest" which was in storage in Hawaii. My parents had it shipped to their home at 236 Tivoli Way in Sacramento, California. I grew up with this cedar chest. Currently, that cedar chest is in Memphis, Tennessee with a distance relative . I have been working to bring the chest to my home here in California for the past several years, but

For years - Actually, all of my life - I've been attached to and felt comfort from ...
the mysterious cedar chest.

Unfortunately, when I was over 5 but probably not over 10, I remember playing Emil's collection of 78 RPM Hawaiian records and later breaking them with a baseball as target practice, while they hung on the Bing cherry tree in our backyard. My mother was not happy. Wish I had those records today

For an example of connections nearly 80 years wide, go to the bottom of this link and read about my uncle's going away party aboard the President Line Ship - Coolidge in Honolulu Harbor in 1937: "the party"

In 1960, while in my senior year at Sacramento Senior High School I was at the California State Fair and stumbled on a booth selling 2-acre plots of land on the Big Island of Hawaii at Orchid Land Estates aka Hawaiian Paradise Park for $1,395.00. I signed the papers without an adult. I vaguely remember making payments of $35.00 a month until I was drafted into the US Army in 1964. My dad paid off the rest of the loan.
In 1973 I sold it for $6,000.00 buying my first home at 3313 Albany Way in North Sacramento, California.

I saw Diamond Head for the first time from a troop ship, the Hugh J. Gaffey, on my way to South Korea in the Spring of 1965.
I was in the US Army.

In 1977 myself, Richard Wilson, Stan Boettcher and Ed Foster flew on Western Airlines from Sacramento to Honolulu then to Lihue, Kauai for 2 weeks in a house in Hanalei.

Sometime in 1983 and after buying our place on the beach in Kapaa, Kauai -- Lappert Ice Cream and Famous Amos Cookies started
