In the 1943-45 log book of Don McBride, Charlie listed his name as:

CHARLES COOK

From Gene Banning's list of 8/31/00:
"... Apr 1943 or Aug 1943? prom capt 7/43 killed in crash on inst. appch to Suifu 12/18/43 plane #83; was on check ride by Wright."

December 31, 2001 -- From Don McBride, via his daughter Eileen McBride
"Charlie Cook - Charlie was being "checked out" by Al Wright on the Suifu run when they flew into a cliff while flying in instrument weather. They were letting down at Suifu when the accident happened. Charlie was apparently an experienced pilot, he just hadn't flown the Suifu run so that is why he was being checked out on that fateful day. That day Dad was to have flown with Al Wright on that run, but when Dad showed up at the airport, his name had been replaced with Charlie Cook's name. That was one of those events that always stayed with Dad. He always wondered if he would have died instead of Charlie had he been with Al that day. We'll never know . . . . . . in this lifetime."

Via Ancestry.com I'm in touch with the niece of Charles Cook, Sheila Sumpter.
Sheila sent me this phone of her uncle.

Thank you Sheila...
