ERNEST (1908 - 1984) AND HILDA WEISS
and daughter
ELIZABETH WEISS

December 10, 2006

My parents, Dr. Ernest & Hilda Weiss, were Methodist missionaries at Nanchang when the war broke out, and they were interned, I believe, at Chapei. My sister, Elizabeth, was born there (or actually next door at the French mission) in June of 1942. They were repatriated on the Gripsholm (I believe on the 1943 trip as mom has said they were exchanged in Goa). Dad died in 1984, but my mother is still alive. At 91, she is in the early stages of Alzheimers, but still remembers quite a bit from those days. (Not having had punishment enough, they went back to Nanchang in 1946, and ended up under the thumb of the communists from 1949 - 1951. Subsequently they went to Korea for twenty years.) If anyone needs to know anything about Chapei, maybe I can ask her?
