WILLIAM ROBERT SHAFFER (19?? - 1993)
"Gypsy"

Memorial Day May 30, 2005 Tom, My father, William R. Shaffer aka "Gypsy", was a pow escapee and served with guerilla units that liberated Los Banos. He was later wounded in action fighting with the 11th airborne. I have some interesting documents from his attempts to receive veterans benefits including letters he had written and replies from the governor of laguna province and guerilla leaders. He submitted his entire story to the claims department for returning prisoners of war {Japan}. Any ideas on how I might find this document? My father died in 1993. He never fully recovered his treatment at Los Banos. He did serve a hitch in the navy before joining the merchant marines and shipping out aboard the President Grant in November 1941. I will send you some interesting things soon. You and I have something in common. I trained at Fort Ord and was later stationed at Fort Lewis only an hour from my home in Seattle. This was 1972 - 1974. Thanks again Mark Shaffer E-mail rockdog1@comcast.net ![]() or would like to be added to my POW/Interneed e-mail distribution list, please let me, Tom Moore, know. Thanks! |
